- Stanford Small-Group Self-Management Programs
Better Choices, Better Health® is an evidence-based 6-week self-management workshop developed and tested by Stanford University. The workshop does NOT replace prescribed treatment. Instead, the workshop augments and supports medical-professional recommended treatment plans. Patients learn skills to help them manage their health conditions and interact with their health care providers. Patients diagnosed with diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and a variety of other disorders may benefit greatly from this program. In addition to the disorders previously mentioned, Better Choices, Better Health® expanded to include a workshop specific to cancer.
Online classes are available at this time. Visit Hawai'i Healthy Aging Partnership for more information.
Cancer: Thriving and Surviving Program is a workshop offered two and a half hours, once per week, for six weeks, in community settings such as senior centers, churches, libraries and hospitals. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are peers who are cancer survivors themselves.
The subjects explained in this program include:
- Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain, isolation, poor sleep and living with uncertainty
- Appropriate exercise for regaining and maintaining flexibility, and endurance
- Making decisions about treatment and complementary therapies
- Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
- Nutrition
